WORLD CUP PHOTOS OF THE DAY

One of the most incredible aspects of soccer is its ability to bring people together. I believe that soccer is the closest thing to a universal language that the world will ever have. These images are evidence of that claim. I doubt that humans will ever be able to perfectly communicate emotions and values across cultural and lingual barriers, but soccer is different. Soccer is a reflection of our deepest desires, it is an escape from our present location and allows us to express our emotions without any inhibition. These images capture that expression perfectly, and they pay homage to the idea that regardless of race or circumstance we have a lot more in common than we think. Clearly soccer is not always a positive unifying force, the darker side of soccer has reared its head far too many times. I have my thoughts on why the duality of soccer is so extreme, but for me the world cup is not a time to reflect on that side of the game, its a time to celebrate together the incredible potential for power to bring people together. I hope you enjoy the pictures, and please share any thoughts or images you've come across. The images come from a great photo blog called The Big Picture, here is a link to the site. . . http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/.
